  • In industrial automation and control systems, devices often communicate using serial communication protocols. Many devices come with a serial port and traditionally communication was done using physical RS-232 or RS-485 ports.
  • Virtual COM ports are software-based emulations of physical serial ports. They allow you to use software to communicate with devices as if they were connected to a physical COM port, even if the connection is over a network or USB.
  • This is especially useful in situations where physical serial connections are not practical or when you want to connect devices over long distances
