Modbus TCP uses Ethernet (TCP/IP) for communication, supports higher speeds, and is easier to integrate into existing network infrastructures. It uses IP addresses and port 502 for addressing and relies on TCP for reliable data transfer.
Modbus RTU uses serial communication (RS-232 or RS-485), is more compact in data format, and requires a master-slave setup with unique device addresses. It is generally slower but simpler and does not need network infrastructure.
To convert between Modbus TCP and Modbus RTU, you typically use a gateway or converter device that translates the Ethernet-based Modbus TCP commands into serial-based Modbus RTU commands and vice versa.
